FTL uses a trailer dedicated to one shipper’s load. It often follows a more direct operating plan and avoids the routine consolidation transfers associated with LTL. That does not mean every truckload uses one tractor, one driver, or a nonstop route. Driver relays, equipment changes, appointments, and other operating requirements can still affect the move.

The practical distinction is not that one mode is simple and the other is complicated. It is that LTL buys a place in a shared network, while FTL buys dedicated trailer capacity.

How much trailer space will the load use?

A smaller palletized load may leave most of a dedicated trailer unused, making LTL worth pricing first. As the shipment takes up more floor space, the economics can change. Weight matters too, but a dense load may reach an equipment or carrier limit before it fills the trailer. An awkward or non-stackable load can consume usable space faster than its pallet count suggests.

This is why a universal cutoff is misleading. Carriers and lanes do not all use the same breakpoints, and two loads with the same weight can occupy very different amounts of space.

How sensitive is the freight to handling?

Properly packaged freight is built to tolerate normal transportation and handling. Even so, some commodities need a different plan because of their shape, fragility, value, security requirements, or inability to be transferred safely. A dedicated trailer may reduce transfers, but it does not eliminate ordinary road vibration, securement needs, or the shipper’s responsibility to package the freight correctly.

Do not use FTL as a substitute for adequate packaging. Use it when the dedicated operating plan solves a real handling or control requirement.

How firm is the delivery requirement?

Standard LTL transit is generally presented as an estimate. The carrier’s network, pickup timing, weather, appointments, and other conditions can affect the actual delivery date. FTL is often more direct, but its schedule still depends on the selected service and operating conditions.

If timing is critical, compare the specific services offered for the lane. A mode name by itself is not a delivery guarantee. Review the terms of any guaranteed or time-sensitive option before booking.

What do the locations require?

A commercial dock-to-dock shipment is different from freight that must be collected or delivered at a residence, construction site, school, secured facility, or location without suitable loading equipment. Describe both locations accurately and select the services they require. Definitions and charges vary by carrier.

Location requirements do not automatically decide LTL versus FTL, but they can change availability and the all-in price enough to affect the comparison.

A compact, dock-to-dock shipment. A business has several well-packaged pallets moving between commercial facilities. Timing is flexible, and neither location needs special pickup or delivery service. A load that uses most of the trailer. A manufacturer is shipping enough palletized product to consume substantial floor space. LTL may still be available, but FTL deserves a direct comparison. Dedicated capacity may be operationally cleaner, and the price difference can narrow as trailer utilization rises.

A smaller shipment with a strict operating requirement. The freight does not fill a trailer, but it has a firm timing, handling, security, or equipment need. That requirement may justify a dedicated or time-sensitive service. It may also be served by an appropriate LTL option. Quote the actual services rather than assuming FTL is the only answer.

The recommendation changes because the shipment requirements change, not because one arbitrary threshold has been crossed.

Where freight class fits

Freight class is commonly part of an LTL quote. Current NMFC rules may classify freight through density-based provisions or commodity-specific requirements, depending on the item. Density alone is not a safe shortcut for every commodity.

FTL pricing is generally not built around an LTL freight class, but the shipper still needs an accurate commodity description, dimensions, weight, and handling information. Those details help determine whether the load is suitable for the requested equipment and service.

If the class is unknown, do not guess merely to complete the form. Gather the finished shipment measurements and commodity details, then use current guidance or qualified help to select the appropriate class.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Treating a commonly quoted weight or pallet range as a rule for every carrier.
  • Assuming FTL freight must physically fill the entire trailer.
  • Choosing LTL only because its base rate looks lower, without including required pickup or delivery services.
  • Choosing FTL only because it sounds faster, without comparing the actual service and timing shown for the lane.
  • Ignoring non-stackable dimensions, overhang, unusual shape, or equipment constraints.
  • Using product dimensions instead of the dimensions of the finished pallet, crate, or other handling unit.
  • Treating an estimated transit time as a guaranteed delivery commitment.

What to gather before requesting rates

Prepare the same accurate shipment details for each mode you want to compare:

  • Origin and destination addresses or ZIP codes
  • Pickup date and any meaningful delivery requirement
  • Commodity description
  • Number and type of handling units
  • Finished length, width, and height of each unit
  • Weight of each unit and total shipment weight
  • Whether the freight is stackable
  • Freight class or NMFC information when applicable
  • Loading and unloading equipment at both locations
  • Location type and access restrictions
  • Requested services, such as liftgate or appointment service
  • Any unusual handling, equipment, value, or regulatory requirement

Keep the inputs consistent when comparing modes. Changing the dimensions, services, or timing between quotes makes the result much less useful.
