LTL Freight Shipping for Wholesalers and Distributors
Prepare wholesale LTL freight with stable mixed-SKU pallets, accurate classification, consistent order documents, and verified receiving requirements.

LTL freight can fit a wholesaler or distributor when an order does not need a dedicated trailer and the finished handling units can move safely through the selected carrier’s network. The decision is shipment-specific. Product mix, packaging, classification, origin and destination facilities, receiver requirements, timing, and carrier rules matter more than a universal pallet or weight threshold.
For a repeatable process, build the shipment from the receiver’s requirements backward: confirm what is being ordered, design stable handling units, measure and classify the completed freight, disclose required services, and keep the quote, bill of lading, packing list, labels, and purchase-order data consistent.
Start with the actual wholesale order
Wholesale freight is not one commodity profile. A distributor may ship uniform cases of one item, a mixed-SKU replenishment pallet, bagged products, pails, fragile display merchandise, dense parts, or an irregular store fixture. Each creates different packaging, handling, stowability, and liability concerns.
Before selecting a mode or requesting a rate, record:
- origin and destination postal codes and facility types;
- purchase-order and customer references;
- handling-unit and carton counts;
- exact commodity descriptions and quantities by handling unit;
- finished length, width, height, and gross weight of each unit;
- pallet, skid, crate, carton, drum, pail, or other package type;
- stackability, orientation, top-load, fragility, or handling restrictions;
- hazardous-material, temperature, or security requirements;
- pickup date, receiving hours, appointment process, and required delivery window; and
- liftgate, inside, limited-access, notification, sorting, segregation, or other requested work.
Then compare available services for that completed shipment. A long, unusually heavy, unstable, non-stackable, high-liability, perishable, hazardous, or time-critical order may require carrier approval, specialized service, or another mode. Acceptance, size, weight, service, and pricing rules differ by carrier.
Build handling units around the product mix
Packaging should protect the goods and create a stable unit that can be moved and stowed as intended. It should not be chosen only to make a load look palletized.
FedEx’s current freight-packing guidance describes pallets, crates, freight boxes, edge protection, banding, stretch wrap, and other materials as tools with different functions. It also provides commodity-specific examples for items such as bagged products, drums, pails, tires, and long freight (FedEx: Freight Packing and Packaging Guidelines). Use those instructions as carrier-specific guidance and confirm the rules for the carrier being considered.

Uniform case goods
Use cartons suited to the product weight and distribution environment. Align the stack so weight transfers through supported carton edges, fill voids when movement could occur, and add tier sheets or edge protection when the design requires them. Unitize the load to the base with a validated combination of containment and restraint.
Keep the load within the pallet footprint unless the product needs a purpose-built base. Overhang can reduce edge support and exposes cartons to contact. Stretch wrap can help contain suitable cartons, but it does not automatically replace banding, blocking, bracing, or a rigid enclosure.
Mixed-SKU replenishment pallets
A mixed pallet needs both physical stability and item-level traceability. Place heavier, structurally compatible goods where the design can support them; do not put dense cases on fragile or crushable cartons. Separate products that can leak, abrade, contaminate, or damage one another. Protect irregular edges and prevent small cartons from escaping the unit.
Record which commodities and quantities are on each handling unit. Do not assume a mixed pallet has one automatic commodity description, NMFC item, or freight class. Determine how the current classification rules and carrier tariff apply to the actual contents.
Bagged or flexible products
Bagged goods can change shape and may be vulnerable to puncture. FedEx’s guide, for example, recommends a pallet, protective trays, an interlocked stack, tier sheets, outside protection when possible, and restraint that keeps bags within the pallet perimeter. Validate the approach for the product, bag material, load weight, pallet, and selected carrier rather than copying one pattern blindly.
Pails, drums, and liquid products
Confirm container compatibility, closures, leakage control, upright orientation, pallet support, and unitization. Separate materials that should not travel together and protect valves, lids, bungs, and dispensing hardware. Determine whether the contents are regulated before tender; ordinary freight guidance does not replace hazardous-material rules.
Fragile, high-value, or presentation-sensitive goods
Retail displays, glass, instruments, finished furniture, and decorated products may need internal cushioning, partitions, surface protection, rigid outer packaging, or a crate. Protect projections and finished faces from other freight as well as from the product’s own movement. Make handling restrictions truthful and visible in the shipping data, but do not assume a label compensates for inadequate packaging.
Long, irregular, or non-stackable goods
Use a purpose-built skid, crate, rack, or braced base that supports the full geometry and permits safe mechanical handling. Include every projection in the finished dimensions. A non-stackable designation can change stowability and pricing, so use it only when the load truly cannot support freight above it and disclose it during quoting.
Measure and classify the finished freight
NMFTA explains that the National Motor Freight Classification evaluates commodities through density, handling, stowability, and liability (NMFTA: National Motor Freight Classification). Density is important for many current items, but it is not permission to classify every commodity from a calculator alone.
Measure the extreme dimensions of the complete handling unit, including the pallet, crate, edge protection, overhang, projections, and anything else that changes the occupied envelope. Weigh the packaged unit, not the product before packing. NMFTA’s current packaging-and-class guidance specifically notes that packaging changes cubic footprint and that extreme dimensions include packing forms such as pallets, crates, and non-stack devices (NMFTA: Packaging and Class).
For each handling unit:
- Identify the actual commodity or commodities as prepared.
- Find the current applicable NMFC item and packaging provisions.
- Calculate density when the item requires it using verified packaged measurements and weight.
- Check for handling, stowability, liability, or carrier-tariff provisions that affect the result.
- Retain the inputs and classification basis with the shipment record.
If a supplier changes a carton, case pack, pallet pattern, product mix, or unit weight, recalculate before tender. A saved SKU master should be treated as controlled data, not permanent truth.
Keep purchase-order, packing, and transportation records distinct
Wholesalers often need a customer purchase order, packing list, carton or pallet labels, routing instructions, advance shipment notice, and bill of lading. These records serve different purposes even when they repeat some data.
Old Dominion’s published VICS bill-of-lading instructions state that the bill of lading is not designed to be a packing list. They also describe using customer-order fields, commodity descriptions, a supplement when necessary, and related electronic data exchange (Old Dominion: VICS Bill of Lading Instructions).
Use the format required by the trading partners and carrier, but keep the same core facts across systems:
- shipper, consignee, bill-to party, and carrier;
- purchase-order or customer references;
- handling-unit and package counts;
- commodity descriptions, weights, NMFC items, and classes when applicable;
- hazardous-material information when required;
- requested pickup and delivery services; and
- special handling or appointment instructions accepted by the carrier.
Do not hide a mixed load behind a vague description such as “merchandise.” Do not use an internal case count as the carrier’s handling-unit count. Resolve mismatches before pickup so the warehouse, customer service team, carrier, and receiver are working from the same shipment.
Confirm every facility and service requirement
A wholesale origin may have a staffed dock while the receiver is a small store, job site, storage facility, school, farm, residence, or appointment-controlled distribution center. Ask what the carrier must physically do at both ends.
Confirm:
- whether a suitable dock or forklift is available;
- whether a liftgate is required and can handle the unit;
- the carrier’s standard pickup and delivery points;
- whether inside, limited-access, residential, notification, or appointment service applies;
- receiving hours, closures, contact process, and appointment lead requirements;
- purchase-order, label, packing-list, or routing-guide requirements;
- vehicle, security, loading, unloading, and site-access restrictions; and
- whether sort-and-segregate, pallet exchange, debris removal, or other work is expected.
Accessorial names, definitions, availability, limits, and charges are carrier-specific. Describe the real location and requested work during the quote instead of selecting a familiar term from memory.
Tender a shipment that matches the quote
Before pickup, compare the finished freight with the accepted quote and shipping documents. Verify unit count, packaged dimensions, gross weight, commodity, classification, stackability, addresses, dates, services, and paying party.
Inspect each unit for loose restraint, crushed cartons, exposed product, leaks, unstable stacking, damaged pallets, and blocked fork access. Apply current labels without covering required marks and remove obsolete or conflicting labels. Photograph the completed units from useful angles and retain the accepted rate or pricing reference according to the provider’s process.
If the order changes after rating, request an updated quote or instruction. Adding cases, replacing the pallet, combining purchase orders, changing the delivery location, or marking the load non-stackable can change the shipment that was priced.
Control delivery evidence and exceptions
Give the receiver the expected handling units, purchase-order references, and inspection process. At delivery, compare the visible unit count and condition with the shipping record before signing. Note specific visible discrepancies on the delivery receipt when appropriate, retain photographs and packaging, and follow the applicable notice and claim procedures.
Do not promise that a photograph, notation, package design, or perfect document guarantees claim payment or prevents a customer chargeback. The contract, tariff, packaging, evidence, timing, liability rules, and facts of the event can affect the outcome. The goal is a truthful, traceable shipment record.
Track recurring exceptions with reason codes such as wrong dimensions, classification change, missing appointment, address correction, reweigh, damaged carton, refused delivery, or missing purchase-order data. Review the pattern by supplier, SKU, pack design, warehouse, lane, carrier, and receiver before changing the process.
Two realistic wholesale workflows
Repeating single-SKU case order
A distributor ships the same boxed product to commercial stores. It can validate one case design and pallet pattern, record the finished unit measurements, confirm the current classification, and maintain receiver-specific service and paperwork requirements. Each shipment still needs a final check because order quantity, destination, packaging condition, and carrier rules can change.
Mixed-SKU replenishment order
A wholesaler combines dense hardware, light boxed goods, and fragile display pieces for one receiver. It separates incompatible items, protects fragile units, builds a stable handling unit, records contents by pallet, and classifies the actual commodities under current rules. If one pallet cannot safely contain the mix, using more than one designed handling unit may be operationally sound even though the quote must reflect the additional footprint.
Neither workflow supplies an automatic class, rate, transit time, claim result, or recommended carrier. Both create better inputs for a shipment-specific comparison.
