How Much Weight Can You Ship by LTL?

LTL freight doesn't have one universal weight cap. Learn the typical LTL weight range, per-pallet limits, minimum billable weights, and what affects your specific shipment.

There is no universal LTL weight limit. A commonly cited range for standard LTL is about 150 to 15,000 pounds, but individual carriers publish different minimums, maximums, and per-piece limits. Some carrier guidance extends the upper end to about 20,000 pounds.

Use those figures as orientation, not as an eligibility test. The carrier, lane, total trailer space, individual-piece weight, dimensions, commodity, and handling requirements can all affect whether a shipment is quoted as standard LTL or another service.

Published LTL ranges are not identical

Different sources draw the LTL range differently:

  • Freightquote describes LTL freight as commonly weighing between 150 and 15,000 pounds.
  • NMFTA’s LTL packaging guidance discusses an approximate range from 100 to 10,000 pounds while noting that carrier practices vary.
  • FedEx Freight describes its LTL service as typically suitable for shipments between 150 and 20,000 pounds.

These figures do not create one industry-wide minimum or maximum. They illustrate why the right answer must be scoped to the provider and shipment being quoted.

At the lower end, a carrier may use a minimum billable weight rather than reject lighter freight. At the upper end, a provider may apply different service rules, pricing, equipment requirements, or shipment limits. Check the current carrier guidance and quote terms instead of assuming a number from another provider will transfer.

Total shipment weight is only one limit

A shipment can fall within a carrier’s total LTL range and still exceed a limit for one pallet, skid, crate, or piece. That is why a quote request should include both the total packaged weight and the weight of each handling unit when available.

Estes provides one carrier-specific example: its LTL FAQ lists a maximum of 2,500 pounds for a standard 48-by-40-inch pallet. That figure applies to the provider and service described on the page; it is not a universal pallet limit.

Per-piece limits matter because terminals and pickup or delivery locations must be able to handle each unit safely. A single heavy item may need different equipment or packaging even when the combined shipment weight appears to fit within a broad LTL range.

When reviewing carrier guidance, keep these limits separate:

  • Minimum billable weight
  • Total shipment weight
  • Weight per pallet, skid, crate, or piece
  • Maximum dimensions or linear space
  • Equipment and location constraints

A billing minimum is not necessarily an acceptance minimum

The lower boundary of an LTL range can be misunderstood. A carrier may accept a lighter shipment but rate it at a minimum billable weight.

For example, the FedEx Freight packaging guide lists a 151-pound minimum billable weight for LTL. That is a provider-specific billing rule. It does not establish a 151-pound acceptance minimum for every carrier, nor does it prove that LTL is the best economic choice for all freight near that weight.

When the shipment is relatively light, compare the available freight options and their complete charges. Do not assume that actual scale weight and billable weight will always be the same.

Dimensions and trailer space can matter as much as weight

LTL is based on sharing trailer capacity. A light but bulky shipment can occupy more space than a compact shipment that weighs more. Pallet count, packaged dimensions, stackability, and linear space therefore influence service fit alongside weight.

As freight approaches a carrier’s standard LTL limits, it can be useful to compare Volume LTL or another suitable service. The point where that comparison becomes relevant is carrier- and shipment-specific. Avoid using one pallet count, weight, or linear-foot figure as an automatic switch.

This distinction is especially important for dense freight. High weight does not by itself tell you how much trailer space a shipment consumes, just as low weight does not guarantee that the shipment fits comfortably within standard LTL.

Weight does not determine freight class by itself

Density is calculated from weight and cubic volume, but freight class is not determined by density alone. NMFTA’s classification framework also considers stowability, handling, and liability.

That means two shipments with the same total weight can require different classification treatment because their packaged dimensions, commodities, or handling characteristics differ. Use the correct assigned class when it is known. If it is not known, provide an accurate commodity description, packaged dimensions, and weight rather than guessing from weight alone.

Heavy freight needs packaging suited to the load

Carrier acceptance is not only about a number on a scale. The freight must also be prepared so the pallet, skid, crate, wrap, straps, and protective materials can withstand normal LTL movement.

NMFTA publishes LTL packaging guidance covering preparation for handling and transit. Use the guidance that applies to the commodity and package, along with current carrier requirements. Do not assume that ordinary retail packaging or a light-duty pallet is sufficient simply because the shipment falls below a published weight maximum.

Before pickup, verify that:

  • The stated weight includes the product, packaging, pallet, and other materials
  • Each handling unit has been weighed or reliably documented
  • Dimensions reflect the fully packaged freight
  • The load is stable and secured to packaging suited to its weight
  • Any equipment or site-access needs are included in the quote request

When to compare a different service

Compare alternatives when the shipment is near a provider’s standard LTL limit, exceeds a per-piece requirement, occupies substantial trailer space, needs equipment the standard service cannot support, or has timing and handling needs that change the decision.

Weight alone should not force the answer. Review total cost, estimated transit, handling requirements, provider terms, and the exact shipment details together. If timing is the main concern, compare standard LTL with expedited freight. If shipment size is the concern, compare standard LTL with Volume LTL using the current options available for the shipment.

What to gather before requesting a quote

Prepare these details:

  • Origin and destination ZIP codes
  • Total packaged shipment weight
  • Weight of each pallet, skid, crate, or piece
  • Packaged length, width, and height for each handling unit
  • Pallet and piece count
  • Commodity description and freight class, when known
  • Stackability and special handling constraints
  • Pickup date and delivery requirements
  • Needed services such as a liftgate, appointment, residential service, inside service, or limited access

Complete inputs make it possible to compare like with like. They also prevent a broad industry range from being mistaken for the rules attached to the actual quote.
