How Long Is an LTL Freight Quote Valid?

An LTL freight quote is valid until the expiration shown by the carrier or quote provider, provided the shipment details still match the information used to produce it. There is no universal industry window that applies to every LTL quote. If the quote does not show an expiration, confirm its status before booking.
That is the practical answer. The date matters, but so do the details behind the rate. A quote for one shipment should not be treated as a standing price for a different pickup date, weight, freight class, destination, or set of services.
Start with the expiration shown on the quote
Use the quote itself as the source of truth. Look for an expiration date, effective date, quote ID, and any conditions attached to the rate. FedEx Freight’s official volume-services quote interface, for example, presents a quote ID together with effective and expiration dates. That illustrates the carrier-specific nature of quote validity without establishing a timeline for every carrier.
If no expiration is visible, contact the company that issued the quote before relying on it. Do not substitute an online average or an old quote from a similar shipment. The issuing carrier, broker, or platform determines whether that particular rate is still available.
A valid date does not excuse changed shipment details
An unexpired quote is still tied to the information entered when the rate was calculated. The safest way to preserve the comparison is to keep those inputs accurate and unchanged.
Review these details before booking:
- Origin and destination postal codes
- Requested pickup date
- Number and type of handling units
- Fully packaged length, width, and height
- Total packaged weight
- Commodity description and freight class when applicable
- Stackability or special handling requirements
- Pickup and delivery services such as liftgate, residential, limited-access, inside service, or appointment delivery

Quote validity and price accuracy are related but different
The expiration date answers whether the issuer is still offering the quoted rate under its stated conditions. Price accuracy depends on whether the shipment actually matches those conditions.
For example, a quote can remain within its displayed validity period while the shipper discovers that the pallet is taller, heavier, or classified differently than originally entered. The date has not changed, but the shipment has. The existing quote no longer describes the freight accurately and should be refreshed.
The reverse can also happen: all shipment details remain identical, but the displayed expiration passes before the freight is booked. In that case, the appropriate action is still to request current pricing.
This is why a quote should be saved with its identifying information and compared against the final shipment record before tender.
Fuel treatment depends on the carrier’s method
Fuel is another reason to read the quote terms instead of relying on a general rule. The U.S. Energy Information Administration publishes weekly on-highway diesel price data, and many transportation companies use EIA data in their own fuel-pricing formulas. EIA also makes clear that it does not calculate or regulate carrier fuel surcharges and that each company determines its own method.
Check whether the quote states how fuel is handled and which date controls the applicable surcharge. Do not assume that every carrier locks fuel in the same way or updates it on the same schedule.
Quote validity is not a delivery guarantee
A valid quote is not the same thing as guaranteed transit service.
Quote validity concerns the rate and the conditions under which it was offered. A guaranteed service concerns a carrier’s delivery commitment and the remedies or exclusions in that service’s governing terms. A shipment can have a valid rate without guaranteed transit, and selecting a guaranteed service does not make the quoted price valid indefinitely.

What to do when a quote is near expiration
Do not wait until the freight is already on the dock to determine whether the rate can still be used. Before booking:
- Find the quote ID, effective date, and expiration date.
- Compare the quoted shipment details with the freight as it is packaged now.
- Confirm the pickup date and all required accessorial services.
- Check the issuer’s current terms if the quote contains special conditions.
- Request a new quote if the date has passed, a material input has changed, or the status is unclear.
Refreshing a quote is not an admission that the earlier rate was wrong. It simply produces a current comparison for the shipment you are actually preparing to tender.
How to compare the refreshed options
When you request current rates, use the same accurate shipment details for every option. Compare more than the headline amount. Check the carrier, service level, estimated transit information, included services, and any conditions shown with the quote.
Keep a copy of the selected quote or confirmation with the shipment record. The quote ID and entered details make it easier to identify whether a later difference came from an expired rate, a changed shipment input, or a separately governed charge.
