How to Estimate Freight Class From Density (and When Density Is Not Enough)
Estimate LTL freight class using density, then confirm it in NMFTA's ClassIT+. Learn the four classification factors and what to enter for an accurate quote.

You can estimate freight class from density only after confirming that the applicable NMFC item uses a density-based class scale. Calculate the density of the final packaged handling unit, then apply the current subprovision for that commodity. If the item has special handling, stowability, or liability considerations, density alone may not identify the class.
The key word is “estimate.” A calculator can tell you pounds per cubic foot. It cannot identify the correct commodity provision or decide whether a full density scale applies.
Calculate the packaged density
For a rectangular handling unit measured in inches, use this sequence:
- Multiply the greatest packaged length by width by height.
- Divide that cubic-inch result by 1,728 to convert it to cubic feet.
- Divide the handling unit’s packaged weight in pounds by its cubic feet.
The result is pounds per cubic foot, often abbreviated as pcf.
Use the freight exactly as it will be tendered. The weight should include the pallet, crate, carton, padding, banding, wrap, and other packaging. The dimensions should include the greatest outer points and any projections or overhang.
If the shipment contains multiple handling units, record the dimensions and weight for each unit accurately. Do not hide a large or unusually shaped unit inside an informal average. NMFTA’s ClassIT+ density tools can accept handling-unit details and return individual and total density information, but the governing NMFC provision still controls how those results are used.
Why density affects freight class
Density describes how much weight occupies a given amount of trailer space. A compact, heavy handling unit and a bulky, light handling unit can weigh the same while presenting different transportation characteristics.
The National Motor Freight Classification uses 18 classes ranging from 50 to 500. NMFTA’s current framework evaluates density, handling, stowability, and liability. For commodities without unusual or significant handling, stowability, or liability concerns, the applicable NMFC item may use the standard density scale. Other items do not rely on density alone.
This is why copying a class from a generic online chart can be risky. The chart does not know what the commodity is, how it is packaged, or which NMFC provision applies.
Identify the NMFC item before using a class range
Start with a specific commodity description. Search the current NMFC for the item that matches the article being shipped, its material or form, and its packaging. Then read the item, subprovisions, notes, and referenced rules.
NMFTA’s ClassIT+ provides access to official NMFC data and tools for searching item numbers and checking current classification information. Its calculators are explicitly described as estimation and reference tools; NMFTA notes that they do not suggest an item’s class.
That distinction matters. The correct workflow is:
- Identify the commodity.
- Find the current NMFC item and subitem.
- Determine whether that provision is density-based.
- Calculate density from final packaged measurements.
- Apply the class specified by the current provision.
If the item assigns a class through another structure or includes special conditions, a generic density table should not override it.
When density is not enough
The three other transportation characteristics explain why some freight needs commodity-specific treatment.
Handling
Handling considers how difficult the freight is to move across the dock and into or out of equipment. Size, configuration, fragility, hazardous characteristics, and special-care needs can affect transportability.
Stowability
Stowability concerns how the handling unit fits with other freight. Excessive dimensions, protrusions, loading restrictions, limited support surfaces, or an inability to place other freight beside or above it can matter.
Liability
Liability can include susceptibility to damage, the potential to damage other freight, perishability, and hazardous nature.
Do not try to assign numerical adjustments to these factors yourself. Their effect is reflected in the applicable NMFC classification provisions.
Common density-estimation mistakes
A mathematically correct formula can still produce an unusable result when the inputs are wrong. Watch for these errors:
- Measuring the product before it is palletized or crated
- Excluding the pallet and packaging from the weight
- Ignoring overhang, protrusions, or the widest packaged points
- Rounding measurements before the calculation
- Combining dissimilar handling units without preserving their individual details
- Treating the calculator result as an official class
- Using an old NMFC item or density scale without checking current information
- Selecting a lower class merely because it produces a more attractive quote
Keep the measured dimensions, scale record, commodity description, and NMFC lookup with the shipment file. That makes the basis for the quote easier to review.
Use the same information throughout the shipment
Carrier quote interfaces may request commodity class, weight, handling-unit count, and dimensions. XPO’s public LTL quote page is one example. Use the same verified information in the quote, shipping documents, and tender details.
If the packaging changes after the quote, measure and weigh the completed freight again. A taller pallet, added crate, or different handling-unit count can change the density inputs and may require the classification and rate to be checked again.

- A precise commodity description
- Current NMFC item and subitem when applicable
- Confirmed freight class
- Greatest packaged length, width, and height for each handling unit
- Packaged weight for each handling unit and the shipment total
- Packaging type and handling-unit count
- Stackability and any unusual handling characteristics
- Hazardous-material status when applicable
- Origin and destination postal codes
- Requested pickup date
- Required pickup and delivery services
