Freight classes 77.5 and 85 are adjacent class numbers, but they are not two adjacent bands on NMFTA’s current standard full-density scale.

Class 85 is part of that scale at 12 pounds per cubic foot but less than 15 pounds per cubic foot. Class 77.5 remains a valid class, but the standard 13-subprovision full-density scale does not contain a class 77.5 band. It may appear in item-specific provisions or in classification work that accounts for handling, stowability, and liability.

Can a generic density chart establish the class? No No. The applicable item must use the relevant provision.

The FCDC density guidelines and the standard full-density scale serve different purposes. Treating them as one chart is the source of much of the conflicting information online.

The standard full-density scale

NMFTA’s current classification policies say density is of prime importance when a commodity does not exhibit unusual or significant handling, stowability, or liability characteristics. Such commodities may be assigned classes through the standard full-density scale.

At the relevant portion of that scale:

  • 10 to less than 12 pounds per cubic foot corresponds to class 92.5
  • 12 to less than 15 pounds per cubic foot corresponds to class 85
  • 15 to less than 22.5 pounds per cubic foot corresponds to class 70

There is no class 77.5 step between class 70 and class 85 on this standard scale. A calculator or chart that inserts a generic class 77.5 band into it is not reproducing NMFTA’s current 13-subprovision full-density scale.

Where class 77.5 fits

Class 77.5 has not disappeared from the NMFC. Current NMFTA docket material contains item-specific provisions assigned class 77.5.

NMFTA’s FCDC Density Guidelines also list class 77.5 with a minimum average density of 13.5 pounds per cubic foot. However, the policies explain that these guidelines aid class assignment when unusual or significant handling, stowability, or liability characteristics are present. They are used with the FCDC’s other classification policies, and the assigned class may be adjusted based on the degree of those characteristics.

That makes 13.5 a classification-development guideline, not a universal shipper rule that says every handling unit at or above 13.5 pounds per cubic foot is class 77.5.

Why density charts disagree

Some charts combine historical density relationships, FCDC density guidelines, carrier calculators, and the current full-density scale into a single table. The result may look authoritative while mixing different sources and uses.

Before relying on a class chart, ask:

  • Does it identify the source?
  • Does it distinguish the full-density scale from the FCDC density guidelines?
  • Does it include an effective date?
  • Does it tell the reader to verify the commodity item?
  • Does it explain that handling, stowability, and liability can affect classification?

If those answers are missing, use the chart only as a prompt for further review, not as the class entered on a bill of lading.

The four transportation characteristics still matter

NMFTA evaluates transportability through density, handling, stowability, and liability.

  • Density compares packaged weight with occupied cubic space.
  • Handling considers the ease or difficulty of moving the freight.
  • Stowability considers how effectively it can be placed with other freight.
  • Liability considers risks such as damage, theft, perishability, or damage to other freight.

NMFTA’s handling guidance notes that size, weight, configuration, hazardous nature, fragility, and other characteristics may require added care or create difficulty. These factors are evaluated in the classification of a commodity or commodity group. A shipper should not invent a one-class “handling adjustment” after using a density calculator.

Instead, read the actual NMFC item, subitem, notes, packaging requirements, and symbols. Those provisions show how the classification applies to the commodity and shipping form.

How to check whether 77.5 or 85 applies

Use this sequence:

  1. Describe the commodity precisely. Material, form, use, and shipping form can affect the applicable item.
  2. Find the current NMFC item. Use current ClassIT+ content or qualified classification assistance.
  3. Read the complete provision. Check subitems, notes, references, packaging requirements, and symbols.
  4. Determine how density is used. Confirm whether the item uses the standard full-density scale, an item-specific density structure, or another class provision.
  5. Measure the tendered handling unit. Use complete packaged dimensions and weight.
  6. Check the effective date. Save the lookup date and verify the content that applies when the freight moves.
  7. Review governing terms. Applicable carrier tariffs, exceptions, or customer pricing agreements may also affect rating.

Do not choose class 77.5 because the calculated density is near 13.5. Do not choose class 85 merely because density falls between 12 and 15. In both cases, the commodity item must support the result.

Calculate packaged density accurately

When measurements are in inches:

  1. Multiply outside length by width by height to find cubic inches.
  2. Divide by 1,728 to convert cubic inches to cubic feet.
  3. Account for all handling units.
  4. Divide total packaged weight in pounds by total cubic feet.

Include the pallet, crate, carton, cushioning, wrap, and projections. If handling units differ in dimensions or weight, calculate from the actual units rather than treating them as identical.

NMFTA says the ClassIT+ density calculator is for estimation and reference and does not suggest an item’s class. Its result is an input to the item review, not a substitute for it.

What the class difference means for a quote

Freight class can affect the rate basis, but the difference between 77.5 and 85 does not produce one universal dollar or percentage change.

The quoted amount can also depend on:

  • Origin and destination
  • Total weight and handling-unit count
  • Carrier tariff or customer pricing
  • Minimum-charge and discount provisions
  • Fuel treatment
  • Pickup and delivery services
  • Other applicable rules or exceptions

Compare complete quotes prepared from the same shipment facts. A lower class number in one offer does not, by itself, prove that the total will be lower than another offer.

If an invoice differs from the quote, identify whether class, weight, dimensions, services, or another rating term changed. Not every billing adjustment is a reclassification.

  • Treating class 77.5 and 85 as adjacent bands on the current full-density scale

  • Measuring the product instead of the complete packaged handling unit
