Freight Class 60 vs 65: Density and Handling Differences

For an NMFC item that uses the standard full-density scale, freight class 65 applies at 22.5 pounds per cubic foot but less than 30 pounds per cubic foot. Freight class 60 applies at 30 pounds per cubic foot but less than 35 pounds per cubic foot.

The boundary is exact: a packaged density of 30 pounds per cubic foot enters the class 60 band. However, that result is useful only after confirming that the applicable commodity item uses those density provisions.

Classes 60 and 65 are adjacent positions on the NMFC class scale, but they are not product categories. A list that labels certain products as “class 60 commodities” or “class 65 commodities” can become inaccurate when the material, shipping form, packaging, or applicable NMFC provision differs.

What the class numbers do and do not tell you

NMFTA defines class as the number assigned to an article or group of articles for determining the applicable rate. The NMFC groups commodities into classes after evaluating their transportability.

Four characteristics inform that evaluation:

  • Density: weight relative to occupied space
  • Handling: the ease or difficulty of moving the freight
  • Stowability: how the freight fits with other freight in a trailer
  • Liability: risks such as damage, theft, perishability, or harm to other freight

For commodities without unusual or significant handling, stowability, or liability characteristics, NMFTA’s current policies use the full-density scale. That is where the class 60 and class 65 bands above apply.

The two classes do not, by themselves, describe different handling methods. A class 60 shipment is not automatically easier to handle than a class 65 shipment. Likewise, a dense article with unusual handling or liability characteristics should not be forced into class 60 merely because its calculated density falls between 30 and 35 pounds per cubic foot.

How handling can affect the classification

NMFTA’s handling guidance considers whether a commodity’s size, weight, configuration, hazardous nature, fragility, or other characteristics require added care or create difficulty for dock personnel. Stowability and liability are evaluated separately.

When one or more of those characteristics are unusual or significant, the applicable NMFC item may use provisions that do not follow the basic full-density outcome. The practical instruction is simple: read the item and its notes. Do not add an informal “handling adjustment” to a class calculated from a chart.

Packaging also matters, but not because every imperfect pallet automatically receives a higher class. Packaging can change the outside dimensions and density, and the NMFC item may contain packaging requirements. It can also affect how the actual handling unit presents for movement. Confirm the item-specific rules rather than applying a universal packaging penalty.

Calculate the density of the tendered handling unit

Measure and weigh the freight in the form the carrier will receive. Include the pallet, crate, carton, cushioning, wrap, and any projections in the outside measurements and packaged weight.

When dimensions are in inches:

  1. Multiply length by width by height to find cubic inches.
  2. Divide by 1,728 to convert cubic inches to cubic feet.
  3. Account for the number of handling units.
  4. Divide total packaged weight in pounds by total cubic feet.

Treat the 30-pound boundary carefully

At this boundary, early rounding can produce the wrong comparison. Retain the measured dimensions and weight, calculate with adequate precision, and apply the range only after the result is complete.

Review the inputs when:

  • A pallet is rebuilt or its height changes
  • Product is added or removed
  • A crate or different packaging is used
  • Freight projects beyond the pallet
  • Multiple handling units have different sizes or weights
  • The stored product profile describes an older configuration

If the actual handling unit changes before pickup, update the quote request and shipping documents. A density saved for one packaging configuration should not be carried forward automatically to another.

How the difference can affect a rate

Freight class is one rating input, not the final price. Class 60 is lower than class 65 in the NMFC sequence, but there is no universal dollar or percentage difference between them.

A shipment-specific price can also depend on:

  • Origin and destination
  • Total weight and handling-unit count
  • Carrier tariff or customer pricing agreement
  • Minimum-charge and discount provisions
  • Fuel treatment
  • Pickup and delivery services
  • Other applicable rules or exceptions

That is why a lower class number should not be compared in isolation across two different carrier offers. Compare complete quotes built from the same shipment facts and review the terms that apply to each option.

Verify the item before choosing either class

Use this sequence before entering class 60 or 65:

  1. Describe the commodity precisely, including material and shipping form.
  2. Find the applicable NMFC item and subitem in current NMFC content.
  3. Review packaging requirements, notes, references, and symbols.
  4. Confirm whether the item uses the full-density scale.
  5. Calculate packaged density from the actual handling unit.
  6. Apply the completed result to the correct density band.
  7. Record the lookup date and applicable provision.
  8. Review any governing carrier tariff, exception, or customer pricing term.

NMFTA describes the NMFC as a voluntary standard and notes that carriers may publish tariff provisions. Do not assume every carrier agreement applies classification and rating terms identically.

  • Do not call 30 to 35 or 22.5 to 30 “rough” ranges. The upper boundary is excluded in each band.

  • Do not use bare product dimensions when packaged dimensions are required.
  • Do not treat density as proof that an NMFC item uses the full-density scale.
  • Do not assume a mixed shipment always defaults to one universal class rule.
  • Do not assume an invoice difference is a reclassification; weight, services, rate terms, or other charges may have changed.
